Hello guys, my name is Stefi and today I will be showing you how to do two-step equation solving.

Here is an example question:

4y-9=15

4 is the coefficient
y is the variable
9 is the constant
15 is the answer

The first thing you have to do is isolate the constant, by doing that you have to do the opposite signs. So if it is -9 you have to do +9 and vise-versa. You have to do it to both sides of the equal sign to keep the equation balanced.

4y-9+9=15+9

Since you isolated the constant you now have to solve the equation, so negative 9 plus 9 is zero. So you are now left with 4y on the left hand side. Now you solve the right hand side, so 15+9 is 24. Now write it all down.

4y-9+9=15+9
4y=24

Now to isolate the variable you have to divide both sides by the coefficient, in this case it is 4. So divide both sides by 4.
4y=24
4      4
So now you are left with just the variable and the answer.
y=6

Congratulations! you did REAL grade 8, 2 step equation solving. IF you still didn't understand watch this video on how to do it!!!
